The deputy Labour leader today said she would not apologise until Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was sorry for remarks he has made in the past. The Ashton-under-Lyne MP sparked outrage when she unleashed a ferocious rant against the Conservatives at a fringe event at the Labour Party conference.

Addressing members in Brighton on Saturday night, she said: “The stories I tell about my childhood are for people to look at themselves and to be able to say ‘look at what we did, look at what we achieved when we’re in government, and look what we can do’.

“And we’ve seen that with our mayors, we’ve seen that with Steve [Rotheram], with Andy [Burnham], we’ve seen it with our members in local government, the difference we’ve made in when we’re in power. We make no difference when we’ve not in power, we’re just shouting from the sidelines.

“I’m sick of shouting from the sidelines, I bet you lot are too.

“We cannot get any worse than a bunch of scum, homophobic, racist, misogynistic, absolute pile of banana republic, vile, nasty, Etonian, posh… piece of scum.”

On Sunday Sir Keir criticised his deputy for her remarks and said he would “not have used” her words.

He said the comments were not in keeping “respectful political debate”.

“Angela and I take different approaches and that’s not language that I would use,” he told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show.

“I will talk to Angela about it later on.”

It is understood the pair spoke about the fallout from the row last night.

But this morning, Ms Rayner continued her assault of the Government as she tweeted about the Prime Minister.

“Boris Johnson also called the children of single mothers ‘ignorant and illegitimate’.

“According to Boris Johnson, when I was a young single mum I should have been pushed into ‘destitution on a Victorian scale’.

“So you can apologise for those comments as well Prime Minister.”

She attached reports of Mr Johnson using offensive remarks such as comparing burka-wearing Muslim women to “letter boxes” and describing gay men as “tank-topped bum boys”.

After her initial comments at the weekend, Foreign Office minister James Cleverly said voters can see a Tory party which has had two female prime ministers and the most diverse government” and “they’ll know she’s talking cr*p”.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said Ms Rayner’s verbal attack was “absolutely appalling”.

He told Sky News: “There’s no place in public life for that sort of language, that sort of behaviour.”

Writing in the Daily Express, Conservative Party chair Oliver Dowden said: “While Conservatives, generally, respectfully disagree with their opponents, it is a sad fact that for all the Left’s talk about kindness and compassion, they tend to produce the worst abuse and intolerance of other views.”
