'Barniexit’ Brit-bashing Barnier mocked as he loses French election bid

The former European Commission’s Head of Task Force for Relations faced a fresh blow after losing to Eric Ciotti and Valérie Pécresse. Both Ciotti and Pecresse earned themselves 25.59 percent and 25 percent respectively.

Michel Barnier fell closely behind with 23.93 percent in the vote.

However, following his defeat, Twitter users were quick to call out Mr Barnier on his embarrassing loss.

Tim Oswald tweeted: “And now, after your big sketch ‘I am a sovereignist and not in the grip of Europe on our destiny’, you can calmly resume your work of destroying nations.

“No one believed you, but we don’t live in the same world…”

CarineM605 tweeted: “Giving a voting instruction doesn’t make you feel bigger, sir.

“Since members are not babies but responsible people, they will choose.”

Frexit Memes tweeted: “Thank you Mr Barnier, now you can re-turn your jacket back to your usual Europeanism.

“The costume of sovereignty did not suit you too much.”

But there were some users who were happy with the politician’s performance.

Ben tweeted: “Congratulations on your very honorable score.
