Lee, Phoebe, Gillian and Jonathan were the four The Chase contestants taking on Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha on Thursday’s episode in the hopes of heading home with some serious cash. With Bradley Walsh on hand once more to dish out the questions, the team got off to a good start as Lee made it back to the Final Chase with an impressive £7,000 to add to the prize fund right away. However, when Phoebe stepped up as the second player, it was her interactions with Bradley which caught viewers’ attention more than her quizzing prowess.

Phoebe, 20, had already made an impression on Bradley earlier in the show when he commented she looked “like a mermaid” thanks to her flowing hair.

The Chase contestant thanked Bradley before Paul came out to take on Matt and even commented he was “a bit worried” about Bradley’s remarks.

When it was Phoebe’s turn to take on the cash-builder, the history student found herself slipping up on a handful of questions from “before her time”.

This included a question about The Goon Show, a famous radio show from the 1950s – something Bradley went on to joke that Phoebe would never have gotten right because of her age.

Phoebe decided to take Paul’s lower offer of £1,000 in a bid to make it back to the Final Chase.

But throughout her head-to-head with Paul, Bradley seemed surprisingly impressed with Phoebe as she continued to get correct answers and eventually made it back for the final.

While Phoebe celebrated and thanked Bradley for his praise and support, many viewers at home felt the ITV frontman was being rather “patronising” of the player because of her age.

“Wtf is Bradley Walsh patronising this girl who took the low offer?  #TheChase,” Michelle Jones fumed on Twitter. (sic)

Kurtis added to the debate as he sarcastically remarked: “Good for a young player KLAXON #TheChase.”

Back to the action and with £8,000 in the prize fund between them, Phoebe and Lee were hoping Gillian could add to the pot.

Racking up £4,000 in her cash-builder, the third player stood firm with what she’d earned when taking on The Sinnerman.

Luckily for the team, Gillian made it back and meant it was down to Jonathan to make it back for a “full house”.

However, Jonatan couldn’t replicate his teammates’ success and was caught by Paul in their head to head, meaning he went home empty-handed.

Sadly for the team, Phoebe, Lee and Gillian all suffered a similar fate in the Final Chase.

Paul caught the team with time to spare and commented it was their speed that let them down and made it possible for him to emerge victorious.

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
