Brexit LIVE: Biden and VDL gang up on Boris as US and EU insist hated deal HAS to stay

The US President spoke to the European Commission President at his own request for 30 minutes on Monday evening. Ms von der Leyen “thanked Biden for his clear words” on the importance of the Northern Ireland Protocol and repeated the EU’s commitment to “seeking solutions without reopening” the agreed deal. The US President has continuously warned the UK over its implementation of the trade mechanism, making clear it must not impact on the peace process in Northern Ireland.

Britain wants to completely overhaul large parts of the Protocol but the EU is continuing to flat out dismiss any chance of this happening.

On Monday, the UK’s Brexit minister Lord Frost warned EU that Britain is ready to trigger Article 16 if the bloc fails to meet its demands for change.

This safeguard measure would enable either side to dispense with the terms of the current agreement if they are proving unexpectedly harmful.

He told the audience at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester: “Without an agreed solution soon, we will need to act, using the Article 16 safeguard mechanism, to address the impact the protocol is having on Northern Ireland.

“That may in the end be the only way to protect our country – our people, our trade, our territorial integrity, the peace process, and the benefits of this great UK of which we are all part.”

He also told a Policy Exchange event at the fringes of the Conservative Party conference: “We’ve got a serious political problem and at the moment we aren’t getting huge amounts of help from the EU in resolving it.

“They’re necessarily a player because of the protocol.

“I hope that might change over the next couple of weeks or so. It does need to be resolved, though, one way or another, whether it’s through negotiations or Article 16.”
