Remainers have been dealt with a blow at the Old Bexley & Sidcup by-election after the Rejoin EU candidate lost his deposit and received just 151 votes.
Conservative councillor Louie French retained the Brexit-backing seat of Old Bexley & Sidcup for the Tory Party in yesterday’s by-election contest.
The southeast London constituency went up for grabs following the death of former Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire.
Eleven candidates put themselves forward to succeed Mr Brokenshire, including Rejoin EU’s Richard Hewison.
Mr Hewison, who finished in a dismal eighth place in the 2021 London Mayoral Election, failed to take advantage of the change in public mood about the UK’s relationship with the Brussels bloc.
A recent opinion poll found a majority of Brits now favoured rejoining the European Union, despite voting to sever ties with the bloc in 2016 and electing a Government to ‘Get Brexit Done’ three years later.
