NewsBrexit LIVE: 'Will not work' Boris and Liz's 'aggressive' plot to shred hated deal savaged

The Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary have in principle signed off plans to present new legislation which will give ministers sweeping powers to shred the Northern Ireland Protocol. Under the proposed Northern Ireland bill, ministers would have unilateral powers to switch off key parts of the protocol in UK law, including border checks on goods travelling to the region from Great Britain – a move which is expected to provoke the European Union’s anger. But former adviser to the Prime Minister, Raoul Ruparel said the “aggressive” plans “will not work”. He explained: “It would put the EU in the difficult position of having to tear up the standstill in the midst of political turmoil and in a delicate security situation. This move if it goes ahead completely changes that and backfires on UK. It would make the UK the aggressor & force the blame onto it. Whereas just waiting to see would force the onus onto the EU.”
