Harry 'feared' chat with Queen blocked over concerns he'd use it as ‘negotiating tactic'

It is one of a number of remarkable claims made in an updated edition of unauthorised biography ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’ by Andrew Morton. Mr Morton has said he was not given permission by the Duchess of Sussex, 40, to write the book – and he has never met her.

The new chapters are set to be released on October 14.

Mr Morton claims Harry, 37, and Meghan feared the “entire institution” was against them.

And the cancellation of a “last minute” meeting with Her Majesty, 95, made Harry suspicious of “internal politics”, the book claims.

Mr Morton wrote: “This sense that, despite their international popularity, they were low down the royal totem pole was confirmed when Harry arranged to meet the Queen for a grandson-to-grandmother chat in early January.

“At the last minute the meeting was postponed. Harry suspected classic internal politics, his family concerned that anything the Queen agreed during informal conversations would be used by Harry as a negotiating tactic.”

Mr Morton also wrote: “The royal couple suspected that the entire institution was conspiring against them.

“As they saw it, the evidence was all around them.

“The unspoken code was straightforward: the future of the monarchy was assured, with or without Meghan and Harry.”

“It was stepping back rather than stepping down.”

In March, Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah Winfrey aired, during which Meghan described suffering with suicidal thoughts while she was pregnant with their first child, Archie.

The Duke and Duchess claimed Meghan could have received better support from the institution as she struggled with her mental health.

They also claimed a member of the Royal Family – who they did not name – made racist comments about their unborn child.

Buckingham Palace said in response to allegations made in the interview that “recollections may vary” – but that issues would be addressed privately.

Harry and Meghan live in Montecito, California.

In June, they welcomed their first daughter and second child, Lilibet Diana, into the world.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s representatives have been approached for comment.
