The quake was recorded at 6.33am UTC (7.33am GMT) on Friday, and had a magnitude of 6.7 – which is classed as “strong”.
In response to the quake, Tsunami Service Provice have issued a warning.
They said: “Based on historical data and tsunami modeling, this earthquake may be capable of generating a tsunami affecting the Indian Ocean region.
“IOTWMS-TSP INDIA will monitor the situation to determine if a tsunami was generated and will issue further bulletins as information becomes available.”
