'Keir WON'T be fined!' Emily Thornberry explains why she told Starmer to make quit promise

News'Keir WON'T be fined!' Emily Thornberry explains why she told Starmer to make quit promise

Labour’s Shadow Attorney General was asked whether she had backed Sir Keir Starmer’s promise to resign if Durham police fined him for breaching lockdown rules. Ms Thornberry defended her party leader over the gathering which took place last April at which Sir Keir was pictured having a beer and curry. On Monday, Sir Keir made a speech in which he offered to quit as Leader of the Opposition if police investigating the event were to issue him with a fine.

Speaking on the BBC, Ms Thornberry made clear she does not believe Sir Keir will be fined.

She told BBC News: “I said to him that there is no way that you have committed any crime.

“There is no way that you have breached any rules, you simply ate because we don’t live on thin air and you were out campaigning and you needed to be able to have something to eat.

“This is completely different to systematic party organising that was happening at Number 10, with invitations going out in advance with come to a party, bring your own bottle, all of this sort of thing, bring your own cake, bring your own cheese enjoy yourself, listen to ABBA, etcetera, etcetera, it’s not the same thing.”
