Lewis Hamilton reveals key ingredient to F1 success – 'I couldn't do it without her'

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has opened up about his relationship with Angela Cullen, the seven-time world champion’s physiotherapist and trainer, admitting he couldn’t do the job without her. New Zealand-born Cullen began working with Hamilton at the start of the 2016 season and has since helped the 36-year-old to four more world titles alongside Mercedes.

Her near-constant presence alongside Hamilton has earned her high praise from fans, who have watched her work alongside the seven-time world champion after a series niggling injuries brought the pair together.

Since then, Cullen has been by Hamilton’s side, most notably being praised by the reigning world champion for nursing him back to full fitness after a crash with Max Verstappen at the Italian Grand Prix.

Hamilton complained of a headache after the race in Monza, after the right rear tyre made contact with his helmet during the shunt.

Speaking at the time he said: “I definitely felt a bit of pain I think after the race and then I said I was going to get it checked out and I worked with Angela straight after the race and during the flight had checkups the next day and then we just worked on it through the week with acupuncture and everything.”

And when asked by Express Sport ahead of the United States Grand Prix how important his relationship with Cullen was, he added: “Angela and I are naturally incredibly close, we pretty much live together.

“And I never had anyone to be able to fix that, and it’s not until after I look back and I’d see Angela.

“So I said why don’t you come on the road with me, because I’m not training on race weekends, I need physio that knows my body and knows what it needs to be as prepared as possible for a race weekend, and then when I’m away I can train with her.

“Along that route, we’ve grown together in terms of how we manage our weekends, how we prepare, taking the least stressed route, and just making sure I’m as fresh as I can be when I get in the car.

“Angela is generally with me from 10pm to 11pm every day, and with me from 6am or 7am every morning, so It’s a very, very important role, very important relationship.

“I don’t think this year has brought us closer together than any other year because we are incredibly close as it is, but we love our job, we love doing what we do, we love doing it together, and I’m incredibly grateful to have her on the road, I don’t think I could do it without her.”

Hamilton sits six points behind Verstappen in the driver standings, with the United States Grand Prix coming up on Sunday at 8pm, with qualifying at 10pm.
