The northbound and southbound motorway has been shut between J16 and J17. The incident took place around 10am and involved a car and two lorries, according to traffic agency Inrix.
National Highways described the incident as a “serious collision”.
In an update, Inrix said: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident, a car and two lorries involved on M6 in both directions between J16 A500 (Stoke-On-Trent / Crewe) and J17 A534 Old Mill Road (Sandbach / Crewe).”
North West Motorways Police has confirmed an air ambulance is being sent following the Road Traffic Collision (RTC).
In a statement, the force said: “We are currently dealing with an RTC Northbound M6 junction 16 to 17.
“Avoid the area we are closing the southbound also for Helimed to land.”
