Man Utd hero David De Gea weighs in on Mark Noble penalty fiasco after West Ham win

Manchester United hero David De Gea has explained what was going through his mind as West Ham made a strange injury-time substitution so that Mark Noble could take a decisive penalty in almost the last kick of the game.

United midfielder Jesse Lingard had put United 2-1 up with just minutes remaining at the London Stadium.

Andriy Yarmolenko’s cross then hit Luke Shaw’s hand in the box and West Ham were given a glorious chance to steal a share of the points.

Declan Rice initially picked up the ball but he handed it over to Noble, who was brought on to take the spot-kick.

However, the 34-year-old’s poor effort was saved by De Gea – leaving Hammers boss David Moyes red-faced.

“It was the last minute, I made the save,” De Gea explained. “A massive three points for us. Going through my head was ‘save the ball’.

“It was a really tough game, both teams had good chances, again a great goal from Jesse.

“It is a massive three points. In the dressing room we said the three points were the most important thing.”

Sky Sport pundit Roy Keane was critical of West Ham’s decision to bring Noble on for such a decisive moment.

“Strange decision, he can’t have warmed up properly because it was so late in the game,” he said.

“I didn’t fancy him, I thought De Gea would save it.

“If he scores again it’s all justified, Gareth Southgate was criticised but to bring someone on who hasn’t had many minutes but sometimes a manager you try be too clever, you can say he’s took penalties before and he’s experienced, I don’t care.

“You have players on the pitch who are up to speed and slot the ball away.”

Fellow pundit Graeme Souness added: “It’s a poor decision, it’s the 94th minute he’s come on as a sub in the 94th minute, he’s stone cold, one or two things the manager’s decision and said on you go or Noble’s said get me on boss.

“Either way it’s the wrong decision, stone cold, doesn’t matter if he scores every penalty in training or every penalty before you don’t bring someone on who is stone cold been sat watching the game. It’s wrong.”
