Manchester United have the budget for one blockbuster arrival this summer and Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland is their top target. There are no sources indicating that the Red Devils are interested in Kylian Mbappe – but perhaps they should be.
Haaland could leave the Bundesliga if his side fail to qualify for the Champions League.
The 20-year-old has a £67million release clause which becomes active in 2022 but a host of clubs are hoping to jump the queue by paying an inflated fee this summer.
Dortmund could demand around £120m for their top goalscorer because he has another three years left on his current deal.
But United have another option they should consider who will tick three more boxes than Haaland.
Mbappe will enter the final 12 months of his Paris Saint-Germain contract this summer and has hinted he could leave the Parc des Princes.
French outlet Le Parisien claim PSG are preparing to slash the forward’s price to just £102m out of fear they may lose him for free next year.
That is where United ‘s first benefit comes to light. They could save £20m on Haaland by moving for Mbappe.
Those funds could then be put towards another of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s problem areas, such as finding a regular partner for centre-back Harry Maguire.
The second box that Mbappe ticks for United is his experience of playing alongside Paul Pogba.
Although Mbappe is only 22 year old, those extra two years experience has seen him perform on some of the biggest stages of them all.
Mbappe has won three Ligue 1 titles, six domestic cups and played in the Champions League final. Not to mention his international accomplishments.
There is not doubt that Haaland will have a glittering career but that extra knowledge could be the difference between pipping Manchester City to the title next year or not.
