It was supposed to be Grayson Allen’s night at FedExForum. Allen stepped to the free-throw line with 1.8 seconds left after he had already tied his season high with six 3-pointers.
But Allen, a 90.6% free-throw shooter, missed both. The shock resonated around FedExForum but Luka Doncic would take the shock even deeper.
Doncic received the inbounds pass and double-clutched a 3-point shot at the buzzer. He ran to the baseline and raised his hands the Mavericks mobbed him.
The Memphis Grizzlies raised their hands in protest as the replay center checked to see if it was a two or 3-pointer. When the replay confirmed a 3-pointer, Doncic was mobbed again as the Grizzlies lost 114-113
Several fans chanted Doncic’s name as he left the court but the Grizzlies didn’t wait to hear it. They left gut-punched Wednesday in a game that was theirs until it wasn’t.
Allen the Sniper
Allen had 14 first-quarter points and made six 3-pointers for the third time this season. He finished with a team-high 23 points as the Grizzlies made 13 3-pointers.
It was Allen who came up huge in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and later an assist to Kyle Anderson for a 3-pointer to put the Grizzlies up five with 2:07 left.
But his misses loomed large as the Grizzlies let another close game slip away.
Cool Hand Luka
Dillon Brooks did a good job defending the Mavericks All-Star in the first half. But Doncic got revenge in the second half. After four points at halftime, he finished with 29 points.
It was the same formula he used two months ago against the Grizzlies. He kept attacking and while the Grizzlies led most of the fourth quarter, the All-Star guard had the last laugh
He added nine assists and only shot 3-for-10 from deep but it was 3-pointer No. 3 the Grizzlies would like to forget.
