Midnight Mass boss exposes hidden link to Hill House: 'Always wanted to tell'

The highly anticipated horror series Midnight Mass created by Mike Flanagan will be premiering on Netflix this week. The filmmaker is also responsible for a number of other film scares and recently exposed the hidden link between his upcoming series and The Haunting of Hill House.

While Midnight Mass could be a new discovery for many horror movie fanatics, Mike Flanagan had been toying around with the idea of it for a while.

In fact, it had an easter egg moment in one of his previous slasher movies, Hush.

The film was about a deaf author, who retreated to a cabin to write her novel in solitary and her best selling book was a novel titled Midnight Mass.

It popped up again in 2017, during a scene in his adaptation of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game.

In the Psychological thriller, Jessie Burlingame (played by Carla Gugino) was handcuffed and tried to scare off a starving dog with a single copy of the book, Midnight Mass.

It was revealed, Mike still has the hardcover copy of the novel in his possession and it’s the only one in existence.

The filmmaker wanted Midnight Mass to have another easter egg moment and feature it in the background during a bookshop scene in The Haunting of Hill House.

However, it wasn’t meant to be, as the copies mysteriously disappeared whilst being shipped to the set in Atlanta.

Elsewhere in the interview, Mike disclosed: “I don’t know how long I could have gone without writing it.”

He explained: “There’s a very natural thing that happens where, if you’re writing anything that tiptoes into a personal place, you find yourself vomiting up all sorts of things into it.

“It’s happened to me with Hill House in a pretty big way, it happened with The Haunting of Bly Manor. This one, though, was the story I always wanted to tell,” he concluded.

The filmmaker revealed he was three years sober and Midnight Mass was clearly personal as he confronted his ghosts through the lead character.

Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford) was a local in Crockett Island who was incarcerated after killing a civilian whilst drunk driving.

Viewers will see how he struggled to live with himself and shake off the face of the woman he murdered.

After his release, he moved back to the community and began two-person AA sessions with the newly appointed and mysterious priest Father Paul (Hamish Linklater).

Throughout the series, the pair bond over heavy conversations centred around religion and addiction.

Midnight Mass airs on Netflix on September 24.
