‘Never question why we need royals again’ Britons praise ‘incredible’ William and Kate

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stepped out for the inaugural Earthshot Prize awards ceremony at Alexandra Palace in north London yesterday. Winners in five categories were awarded £1million to develop their initiatives by the decade-long award scheme.

Twitter users were full of praise for William’s ambitious environmental prize aimed at finding solutions to repair the planet.

One user with the handle @joemichalczuk said: “If anyone ever says to me again ‘what is the point of the Royal Family?’ – I will point them towards the #EarthshotLondon2021 – what an incredible use of influence from @KensingtonRoyal – and a great example of British soft power. Superb. Inspiring.”

Another user, @HarryMaxwell, wrote: “Have to say #EarthshotPrize is the most impressive thing from the Royal Family that I have ever seen.

“Great stuff from William and Kate. Fine ambassadors for the U.K. too!”

A third Twitter user, @brigantia__, commented: “Well done to both William and Catherine, years of work put into this.

“And it was such a success, congratulations to all the winners and finalists, such important work that will make a difference.”

Another person with the handle @jackknowles said: “What I love most about #EarthshotPrize is the positivity – inspiring everyone with the recognition we can reverse climate change and deforestation, together we can build a very different world.

Kate, who presented the winning award in the protect and restore nature category, said: “Nature is vital to us all.

“A thriving natural world, regulates our planet, nurtures our physical and mental health and helps feed our families.

“But for too long, we’ve neglected our wild spaces and now we’re facing a number of tipping points.

If we don’t act now, we will permanently destabilise our planet and we will rob our children of the future they deserve.”

At the end of the evening, William took to the stage to tell the audience: “I want to say something to the young watching tonight.

“For too long, we haven’t done enough to protect the planet for your future, the Earthshot is for you.

“In the next 10 years, we are going to act. We are going to find the solutions to repair our planet.

“Please keep learning, keep demanding change, and don’t give up hope. We will rise to these challenges.”
