Queen snubs 'Oldie of the Year' award as monarch states she 'does not meet the criteria'

The Queen turned down the Oldie of the Year Awards, issued every year by The Oldie magazine, with an extraordinary statement providing a glimpse of Her Majesty’s wit. A letter written to The Oldie by the 95-year-old monarch’s assistant private secretary, Tom Laing-Baker, read: Thank you for your letter of 30th July, addressed to Sir Edward Young, asking if The Queen would accept The Oldie of the Year award.

“Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel, as such The Queen does not believe she meets the relevant criteria to be able to accept, and hopes you will find a more worthy recipient.

“This message comes to you with Her Majesty’s warmest best wishes”.

This letter was written during the Queen’s stay at Balmoral Castle this summer and is dated August 21.

It was published by The Oldie ahead of today’s award ceremony.
