Sia’s “Music” has hit all the wrong notes.
The singer’s seemingly well-intentioned but deeply misguided drama sparked backlash earlier this year for its depiction of autism and casting of neurotypical actress Maddie Ziegler as a nonverbal girl on the spectrum.
Now, the musical film leads the “winners” of this year’s Razzie Awards, which annually recognize the very worst of Hollywood. “Music” picked up three “dishonors,” including worst director (Sia), actress (Kate Hudson) and supporting actress (Ziegler).
The Golden Globe-nominated movie carries an atrocious 8% from critics on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. Although it was also nominated for the Razzies’ worst picture, that award ultimately went to “Absolute Proof,” MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell’s film claiming a Chinese cyberattack “flipped” the 2020 election from Donald Trump to President Joe Biden.
Lindell also won worst actor, while former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani took home worst supporting actor for his compromising cameo in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.”
Keeping to tradition, the 41st annual Razzie winners were announced the day before the Academy Awards. Unlike Sunday’s Oscars, which will largely be broadcast from Los Angeles’ Union Station, the Razzies once again forewent their usual in-person ceremony this year, after being forced to cancel last year’s event due to COVID-19.
Past Oscar winners Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock have famously accepted their Razzie trophies in person, for “Catwoman” and “All About Steve,” respectively.
Last year, Tom Hooper’s gloriously awful “Cats” swept the Razzies with six dishonors, including worst picture, supporting actor (James Corden) and supporting actress (Rebel Wilson). The critically reviled but cultishly beloved CGI musical is a movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic Broadway show.
The Razzies, also known as the Golden Raspberry Awards, are satirical awards voted on by 1,090 members from the U.S. and abroad.
