Rio Ferdinand questions Mo Salah's agent chats as Liverpool urged to give star huge deal

Rio Ferdinand has offered a theory as to why Mohamed Salah is yet to sign a new contract with Liverpool. Salah’s current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2023 and the Reds have been locked in negotiations with the Egyptian and his agent throughout this season over extending his contract.

Salah has been in incredible form for Liverpool this season, with his goal in their 2-1 win over AC Milan on Tuesday night his 20th in just 21 appearances.

The rebound following Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s saved shot saw him become the first Liverpool player since club legend Ian Rush in the 1980s to reach the 20-goal mark in five consecutive seasons.

Salah may have come seventh in the running for the 2021 Ballon d’Or award, but many pundits have claimed he is currently the best player in the world.

According to The Mirror, Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, is seeking around £500,000 per week for his client to sign a new contract with Liverpool.

Former United defender Ferdinand then shared his theory as to why the two parties have not been able to agree terms yet.

He said: “Do you think he (Salah) is sat there talking with his agents saying, ‘just go and find out who the biggest highest paid player in the league is and put me a couple of pounds above them?’”

Salah has been Liverpool’s clear stand-out player so far this season, leading the scoring in both the Premier League and Champions League.

He has contributed 13 goals and nine assists in just 15 league matches and seven goals in six Champions League games.

Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch is clear in his view of what Liverpool must do.

“There’s nobody better in the league at the moment,” he said.

“Whatever the best player in the league is on, give him that.”

Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is paid around £400,000 per week, according to The Mirror.

However, according to the same newspaper, Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest paid player in the league, pulling in around £500,000 per week.
