Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema are celebrating on October 13 their first decade together as a married couple. The young royals were married in Punakha Dzong, the administrative centre of Punakha District, with a traditional Buddhist ceremony.

This wedding was announced by the Oxford-educated king, who was 31 at the time, during the opening of the Bhutanese Parliament in March 2011.

Speaking about his then-20-year-old bride, he said: “Now, many will have their own idea of what a Queen should be like — that she should be uniquely beautiful, intelligent and graceful.

“I think with experience and time, one can grow into a dynamic person in any walk of life with the right effort.

“For the Queen, what is most important is that at all times, as an individual, she must be a good human being, and as Queen, she must be unwavering in her commitment to serve the People and Country.

“As my Queen, I have found such a person and her name is Jetsun Pema.

“While she is young, she is warm and kind in heart and character.

“These qualities together with the wisdom that will come with age and experience will make her a great servant to the nation.”

For his nuptials, the ‘Dragon King’, as monarchs in Bhutan are known, wore the same outfit donned by his father and grandfather on the day of their weddings.

The new Queen was wrapped up in a Kira – the national dress for Bhutanese women – underneath a yellow tego, a traditional jacket.

This royal wedding attracted the attention of the world and became Bhutan’s largest media event – also thanks to the popularity of the sovereign and the beauty of the bride, a former student at Regent College London.

The union was followed by public celebrations in the country lasting for several days.

On October 15, the happy couple joined 30,000 people at Changlimithang Stadium – where the Dragon King famously kissed his wife, marking a rare display of public affection among the country’s elite.

Five years after their marriage, the couple welcomed first son and future Bhutanese monarch Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel.

Eighteen months ago, his brother, Prince Ugyen Wangchuck, was born.

The Bhutanese couple isn’t the only royal union to have been celebrated 10 years ago.

On April 29, 2011, Kate and Prince William tied the knot at Westminster Abbey and became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Earlier this year, they marked this milestone by sharing two new portraits and a family video, in which they can be seen cosying up in their Norfolk garden and playing on a beach with their three children.

Zara Tindall, the only daughter of Princess Anne, also marked her 10th wedding anniversary with former rugby player Mike Tindall this year.

The couple were married on July 30, 2011 and have since become proud parents of Mia, Lena and Lucas.

The private couple didn’t reveal how they celebrated their milestone, but Mike shared the “key” to their successful partnership may have been the fact his wife has also been his “best friend”.

He told the Telegraph: “At the end of the day, we can sit down and laugh at each other and have a good time. It’s been an amazing 10 years.”

Two more royals who celebrated their wedding in 2011 are Princess Charlene and Prince Albert of Monaco.

The couple’s anniversary fell on July 1 – but they could not spend it together as the princess has remained grounded in South Africa since May due to an ENT infection.

Speaking about her absence from Monaco, the former Olympic swimmer told South Africa’s Channel24: “It’s been a trying time for me. I miss my husband and children dearly.

“What has been extremely difficult for me was when I was instructed by my medical team that I could not return home for my 10th wedding anniversary.

“Albert is my rock and strength and without his love and support I would not have been able to get through this painful time.”
