The officer, PC Ireland Murdock is alleged to have committed the offence on September 25 last year. According to a statement by the organisation, the incident was alleged to have taken place in Lambeth in the south of the capital.

The charged officer was not on duty at the time of the offence.

PC Murdock is due to appear at Croydon Magistrates court later today.

The officer was attached to the Central North Command Unit of the MPS, and has been suspended from service pending the outcome of the case.

Mr Murdock was first arrested on January 11 according to the MPS.

The Directorate of Professional Standards, the police’s internal investigation unit for monitoring conduct and complaints have been informed of the latest development.

Police watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct has also been appraised of the incident.

A spokesman for the MPS said the victim was being provided with specialist support.
