Tesco had earlier said that it had a “good availability of fuel” at its own filling stations, while some Esso-branded filling stations with a Tesco store have been affected.
But many Tesco filling stations are branded by Esso, whose owner ExxonMobil said a “small number” of forecourts have been impacted by the disruption.
And photos taken outside the Cardiff branch show a long line of traffic cones blocking off the garage and no cars at the pumps.
A spokesperson for ExxonMobil told Wales Online: “The majority of the 1,200 Esso-branded sites in the UK are owned and operated by a number of independent retail companies, these companies are responsible for arranging supplies of Esso fuel to their sites.
“As regards our own operations, a small number of our 200 Tesco Alliance retail sites are impacted.
“We are working closely with all parties in our distribution network to optimise supplies and minimise any inconvenience to customers.
“We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience.”
BP meanwhile has said it is cutting back on its deliveries across the country in order to ensure it doesn’t run out of fuel, the oil giant claiming it’s become increasingly affected by the increasing shortfall of international delivery drivers.
The company’s head of UK retail, Hanna Hofer, described the situation as “bad, very bad”, according to a report by ITV News.
And while a specific timeline is so far unclear, restrictions could come in to play “very soon” with some service stations not being restocked for one-and-a-half days each week.
Those on motorways, however, will be prioritised and restocked as normal.
Paul Scully, Small Business Minister, discouraged Brits from panic-buying petrol and other items affected by the supply crisis.
“Look, this isn’t a 1970s thing at all,” the MP for Sutton and Cheam, south London, said.
Tesco opened its first petrol station in 1974 and currently has more than 600 across the UK.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “We have good availability of fuel, with deliveries arriving at our petrol filling stations across the UK every day.”
