The Handmaid’s Tale season 5: Showrunner hints June could go undercover

Hulu’s dystopian series, The Handmaid’s Tale followed the like of June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) as she was abducted and forced to work under the strict Gilead’s regime. Season four saw June finally become a free woman in Canada and after the shocking finale, showrunners hint she may have to go undercover.

When Gilead first went into power, June was separated from her family and forced to become a Handmaid in the patriarchal state.

There she spent seven years working in the Waterford household, with the duty of carrying their child.

During a ritualised act of Ceremony, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) forced himself onto her, while his wife Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) held her down.

Throughout her time in Gilead, June made multiple attempts to escape but was more often caught and brutally punished.

In a conversation with Variety, author Margaret Atwood sat down with creator Bruce Miller and executive producer Warren Miller to discuss the upcoming instalment.

Talking about June’s fate, Margaret stated: “First of all it’s justice and second of all, it’s war but having done that it has to have had an effect on her and we do see the beginning of that.”

In the final scene, June was cradling her daughter Nichole, still covered in Fred’s blood and saying she had to go.

The author added: “I do expect we will see that in the next season like what has she become and what sort of a target is on her now.

“Because once you do vengeance like that the other side then says it’s our turn and we have to eliminate her, I expect she going to have to go into deep cover,” she hinted

Many fans were left wondering where June was planning to go, however, this tease may have just confirmed she could indeed go undercover.

It would be her best bet as Gilead is powerful, and after murdering one of its establishers she could face brutal punishment, even though she lived in Canada.

Fans will have to tune into season five to see how June will fare now she killed Fred and how Serena will react.

Sadly there is no release date, however, express.co.uk will be updated with new information.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 is available to stream on Hulu in the USA and airs Sundays on Channel 4 in the UK.
