Timo Werner running out of Chelsea chances as he is slammed once again after Man Utd draw

Timo Werner has been warned his Chelsea place is under threat after his shaky performance in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon. Werner spurned a few good opportunities as Thomas Tuchel’s side were held to a draw by the visitors at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea dominated possession and had the majority of the chances in the Premier League match, but could not make their pressure tell.

Jadon Sancho gave the hosts the lead on the break following a glaring error by Jorginho, who surrendered possession on the half-way line to send the United forward through on goal.

The Italian international went some way to atoning for his mistake by slotting away the equaliser from the penalty spot following Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s clumsy foul on Thiago Silva.

But the Blues could not find the winner as Werner’s wayward finishing and Antonio Rudiger’s lack of composure with a late chance handed United a point.

Werner was chosen to lead the line by Tuchel, with Romelu Lukaku on the substitutes’ bench after injury, but the German did not make the most of the chance, having six shots without hitting the target.

“At the end of the day, you’re a No 9, you’re going to be judged on the opportunities you get and what you do with it. It wasn’t good enough.

“He needs to score those chances. He keeps missing big chances, big opportunities. He needs to put them away.”

Werner’s best chance came from a corner in the second half, but he shanked his effort well wide of the post.

Former United midfielder Roy Keane was typically acerbic in his analysis of Werner’s finishing ability.

“He’s not even hitting the target with some of these chances,” Keane said.

“At least make the goalkeeper make a save. For a striker, hit the target, make the keeper work.”

Werner has scored just three goals in all competitions across 11 appearances so far this season.

The 25-year-old was signed from RB Leipzig for an initial fee of £47.5million last summer but has struggled in front of goal ever since.

The Germany international has managed just 15 goals and 16 assists in 64 appearances for the Blues altogether.
