Tory Conference LIVE: Oliver Dowden grilled over Sarah Everard murder as event kicks off

Mr Dowden, the Conservative Party co-chairman, was asked by Sky News this morning whether there will be an inquiry into how Wayne Couzens came to be a Metropolitan Police officer. Mr Dowden said the situation is “deeply disturbing”. He said: “I do think its important that Cressida Dick as the commissioner properly investigates that, and I think we just need to let her get on with the job of doing that.”

His comments come amid mounting calls for Police Commissioner Cressida Dick to resign over the incident, which allowed a dangerous sexual offender in the ranks.

The Tory co-chairman added that the Metropolitan Police will face “very serious questions”.

Pressed on the comments made by police commissioner for North Yorkshire Philip Allott which said women need to be “more streetwise”, Mr Dowden assured viewers both he and the Prime Minister were “outraged” by the remarks.

He said: “Be assured that the prime minister and I profoundly disagreed with what he said, it was a stupid thing to have said and he has rightly apologised for it.”
