Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) has been at the centre of the drama on NCIS for almost two decades and he was one of the last original characters still featuring on the show. It was heavily speculated ahead of season 19’s release the actor who plays him was going to be stepping down from the role, or at least appearing less frequently. In Monday night’s episode and after a showdown with his adversary Paul Lemere (Jason Wiles), his journey came to an end. Why is Gibbs leaving NCIS?

In the latest gripping episode of the programme, Gibbs decided he was not going to pursue a career in law enforcement after going on the run.

Even though it seemed the character was leaving for good at the end of the instalment, there are hints he could return.

Showrunner, Steve Binder said in a statement: “As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the fabric of the show.

“Our north star has always been staying true to our characters, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go.

“So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years…never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”
