YOU season 4: Joe's long-lost brother to win custody of Henry after huge flashback clue?

Joe (played by Penn Badgley) looked like his number was up in the final moments of You season three but in true Mr Goldberg fashion, the Netflix drama’s leading man managed to manipulate his way to survival. After being poisoned by his deranged wife Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), Joe had secretly taken an antidote and was able to kill Love as she held a knife to his throat, leading him to plot an escape and leave his life – and son Henry – behind. Henry ended up in the arms of library worker Dante (Ben Mehl), although a key flashback scene from season three has fueled the theory he may find a new home in season four.

The original theory stems from the final in a series of flashbacks from Joe’s childhood which appeared frequently in the third run.

As well as delving into Joe and Love’s murderous marriage struggles, season three dipped into Joe’s tumultuous upbringing arguably more than ever before.

Season three told how Joe struggled in the care system and how he yearned to be reunited with his mother and escape a life of bullying from those placed in the system with him.

By the time the season three finale rolled around, You viewers got one final flashback as Joe contemplated his escape plan and it’s here viewers are introduced to a new member of the Goldberg clan.

In it, a young Joe has managed to track down his mother in New York and paces towards her home to reunite with her.

However, he sees his mum, who now looks in a much better place, leave her home with a young boy called Jake.

“Jakey, let’s go,” Joe’s mum says as she leaves the house before showing a rarely seen motherly side. “There’s nothing I’d rather do than be with you, buddy.”

A heartbroken Joe can only watch on before he finally comes face to face with his mum who, despite seemingly getting her life back on track, still has no time for her eldest child.

Before the credits roll and before fans see Joe in his new home in Paris, however, he provides an update on Henry now he’s in Dante’s care.

“Henry arrived into Dante and Lansing’s life with a note expressing my last wish, that they protect Henry as if he were their own son,” Joe narrates.

Joe goes on to reveal that it took a “long legal battle” to have Henry placed in Dante’s custody instead of Love’s mum Dottie (Saffron Burrows), citing her alcohol and drugs problems as the main reason.

However, Dottie’s claim for custody over Henry came as she was his last surviving blood relative – or so she thinks.

You viewers now know Joe has a brother, Jake, and while his mum may not want anything to do with Joe’s life, who’s to say a grown-up Jake may not start taking an interest.

After all, why else would the Netflix drama have introduced such a key figure in Joe’s life and backstory so late in the series if it weren’t for a major storyline?

Joe and Love’s “deaths” made mainstream news given the explosive nature of the crime, could Jake stumble across the headline in the fourth season?

And if he does want to learn more about his brother and discover he has a nephew currently in the care of someone not blood-related, Jake could well stake a claim to become Henry’s guardian.

Fans will have to tune into season four when it arrives to find out but given Henry’s lack of biological family around him, Jake could be a way to ensure the Goldberg family name lives on.

You seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix now.
